Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens
November 28, 2011
This Emergency Message is to alert all U.S. citizens living in or visiting Burundi to a home invasion that resulted in the deaths of two Italians and the severe injury of a third. On November 27, 2011 at approximately 9:00 p.m., gunmen invaded the home of three Italians in Kiremba, 20 miles outside the city of Ngozi and about 85 miles from Bujumbura. Two people were shot and killed and one was seriously injured. Initial reports indicate that the motive was robbery. The U.S. Embassy's security and travel recommendations remain unaltered. However, recent events do call for heightened attention to residential security. This is the second attack targeting foreigners in the past six months and the first to result in deaths. Due to the potential for U.S. citizens to be targeted for economic reasons, the Embassy strongly suggests U.S. citizens evaluate the security of their homes and take personal safety precautions.
