Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens - General Strike 27-MAR

The U.S. Embassy alerts U.S. citizens living in or visiting Burundi of a planned general strike by unions and other civil groups to be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. This strike is to protest recent increases in the cost of basic necessities, particularly water and power. The strike will likely consist of people staying home from work on Tuesday. Difficulties with transportation or other services throughout the day are likely. You are advised to plan accordingly and be prepared for potential service disruptions caused by the strike. Please check local media for updates.
