Messages for U.S. Citizens

Security Message -- June 28, 2012

This Security Message is to alert all U.S. citizens living in or visiting Burundi of the need for heightened security awareness in light of three recent events. The most recent was the discovery of two unexploded grenades in central Bujumbura on Thursday, June 28, 2012. Additionally, a confrontation took place between the Burundian military and armed bandits near Kibira, north-east of Bujumbura, on Saturday, June 23. Also on June 23, there was an armed robbery of a private business in the Buyenzi neighborhood of Bujumbura, which involved a grenade explosion.

American citizens are reminded to avoid large crowds and maintain a heightened state of alert for suspicious activity. In addition, American citizens should expect a large Burundian security presence throughout Bujumbura and road closures during this celebratory period which ends on July 2, 2012.
