IMMIGRANT VISAS
Family-Based Visas
The Embassy does not issue immigrant visas. In certain cases, however, we can process part of the initial stage of the application. For further information about adoptions and immediate relative petitions, please contact the consular section in Bujumbura at +257 22-22-7000
A U.S. citizen may submit an immediate relative-based (I-130) petition on behalf of his/her spouse or minor child at the U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura, provided the U.S. citizen petitioner can show that he/she has been legally residing in Burundi continuously for at least six months before filing the petition.
American citizens wishing to adopt in Burundi, who have an approved Application for Advance Processing of Orphan Petition (I-600A) from USCIS, may submit a Petition to Classify Orphan as an Immediate Relative (I-600) at the Embassy. If approved, their petitions will then be sent to the Immigrant Visa section in Nairobi for further processing of the immigrant visa. Applicants will be required to travel to Nairobi to complete the application.
Beneficiaries of Refugee/Asylee Relative Petitions (I-730) are interviewed by special appointment only. These appointments are made directly with the consular section via telephone at +257 22-22-7000
