Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens
July 22, 2011
U.S. Embassy Bujumbura, Burundi
This Emergency Message is to alert all U.S. citizens living in or visiting Burundi to heightened security concerns in the Muyinga region. Due to night time attacks by armed groups against the Burundian security forces and acts of banditry, Embassy personnel have been advised to avoid lodging overnight in Muyinga. No additional restrictions on daylight travel to Muyinga have been added. The Embassy recommends that you take precautions to avoid this region after dark to mitigate this increased security risk. When travelling outside of the 30 kilometer radius of Bujumbura, Embassy personnel are required to get approval from the Embassy's Regional Security Officer, and travel in two-vehicle convoys equipped with satellite phones and emergency equipment.
You can stay in touch and get Embassy updates by checking the U.S. Embassy Bujumbura web site. You can also get global updates at the U.S. Department of State's, Bureau of Consular Affairs website where you can find the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information.
